Verified Ham with Discord roles

Give a role in your Discord server only to members with a verified call sign. No bot to run.

Discord's Linked Roles let a server require something about a member before they can take a role. With Verified Ham, that's a verified call sign: members link their account once, and the role follows their verification from then on. There's no bot to host, and no code.

1. Add Verified Ham to your server

You need the Manage Server permission. Add Verified Ham to your server, and pick the server. It asks for no permissions: it can't read or post messages.

2. Create the role

  1. Open Server Settings → Roles and choose Create Role. Name it, for example "Verified ham", and save.
  2. Open the role's Links tab, choose Add requirement, and pick Verified Ham from the apps in your server. If it isn't listed, step 1 hasn't been done for this server.
  3. Turn on Verified call sign, then save the changes.

Discord only lets you add a requirement to a role nobody has yet. To use an existing role, remove its members first, or make a new role.

3. Give the role something to unlock

A linked role is an ordinary role once a member has it. Give it a colour, or give it access to channels: in a channel's Edit Channel → Permissions, add the role and allow View Channel. To make a channel for verified hams only, also turn off View Channel for @everyone there.

4. Tell your members

Members don't get the role automatically: each one claims it, once.

  1. Click the server name at the top of the channel list, and choose Linked Roles.
  2. Pick the role, then connect Verified Ham and authorize it on Discord's screen.
  3. Sign in to Verified Ham, which links the two accounts. Anyone who hasn't verified their call sign yet is shown how.
  4. Go back to Discord, where the requirement now shows as met, and finish claiming the role.

Their Discord profile then shows their verified call sign as a connection. Try it yourself first: server owners can claim linked roles too.

If someone's verification ends (their licence lapses, or the call sign moves to someone else), Verified Ham updates Discord, and the role's requirement stops being met.
