Terms of service

Verified Ham is run by Nicernet, LLC ("we"). By creating an account, verifying a call sign, registering an app, or linking Verified Ham to Discord, you agree to these terms. Our privacy policy explains how we handle your information.

What Verified Ham does

We confirm that a person receives mail at the address on an amateur radio licence, by mailing a one-time code there, and we tell the apps you sign in to that your call sign is verified. A verification shows that, at the time, someone with your account received mail at the licence's address. It is not a licence, it isn't issued by the FCC, ISED or any government, and it doesn't replace checking a licence where the law requires it.

Your account

  • Give a real email address that you control, and keep your passkeys and backup codes safe. You're responsible for what is done with your account.
  • One person per account. Don't create accounts for others, except as a parent or guardian.
  • Tell us promptly at support@verifiedham.net if you think someone else has used your account.

Verifying a call sign

  • Only verify a call sign that is licensed to you. Starting a verification for someone else's call sign, or trying to obtain or guess the code on someone else's card, is not allowed.
  • Verification costs $3.00 per postcard, paid when you request it. It covers printing and postage.
  • If the card can't be mailed, for example because the licence isn't eligible, we refund the payment automatically. We don't refund cards that were mailed, including cards returned as undeliverable or codes that expire unused, but if your card never arrives, get in touch and we'll help.
  • The card goes to the address the licensing authority has on record. Keeping it up to date is up to you.
  • We limit how many cards can be sent for a call sign, and a card's code works for 60 days.
  • A call sign can be verified by only one account at a time. We re-check verifications against new licence data, and revoke a verification if the licence lapses, the call sign is reassigned, or we find it was obtained by fraud or by mistake.

Signing in to apps

Apps that offer "Sign in with Verified Ham" are run by their own developers, not by us. We share what you approve on the consent screen; what an app does with it is governed by that app's own terms and privacy policy. A listing in our app directory isn't an endorsement.

For developers

  • Registering apps and signing users in are free. We may change that in future, with notice.
  • Keep your client secrets confidential, and use the information you receive only for the purposes your users approved, in line with your own privacy policy.
  • Don't present your app as made or endorsed by Verified Ham, and follow the sign-in button guidelines.
  • Don't overload the service, scrape it, or use it to collect licence data in bulk. We may limit or disable apps that harm users or the service.

Discord

Server administrators can use Verified Ham's Linked Roles to give roles to members with a verified call sign. A member decides whether to link their account, and can unlink it at any time from their Verified Ham account. Server administrators are responsible for how their roles are used. Using Discord is also subject to Discord's own terms.

Acceptable use

Don't use Verified Ham to:

  • impersonate anyone, or verify a call sign that isn't yours;
  • harass licensees, or use licence information you see here to contact, track or harm anyone;
  • break the law, or help anyone else to;
  • probe, attack or disrupt the service, or get around its limits. Security researchers acting in good faith are welcome: please report what you find to support@verifiedham.net.

We may suspend or close accounts and apps that break these terms, and revoke verifications obtained in breach of them. Where we can, we'll tell you why.

Ending your account

You can ask us to delete your account at any time, by email. We may stop offering Verified Ham, or any part of it; if we do, we'll give account holders reasonable notice.

No warranty

Verified Ham is provided "as is". We work to keep it accurate and available, but we don't promise that it will be uninterrupted or error-free, that licence data is accurate, or that every verification is correct. Apps relying on Verified Ham should decide for themselves how much to trust it.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, Nicernet, LLC is not liable for indirect, incidental, special or consequential damages, or for lost profits or data, arising from your use of Verified Ham. Our total liability for any claim is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or US$50. Some places don't allow these limits, so they may not apply to you.

Changes

We may update these terms. We'll change the date at the top, and email account holders before a significant change takes effect. Continuing to use Verified Ham after that means you accept the new terms.
